Last year in Russia, 963 women died from domestic violence. 530 of them were killed by partners (former or current husbands, cohabitants, boyfriends), another 433 — by family members. This data was provided by Russia to the UN, noted by «Important Stories»*.
The share of women who died as a result of domestic violence reached 47% of all intentionally killed in the country for the year, setting a record for 15 years. As the publication notes, from 2010 to 2019, this figure rose from 23% to 45%, and then began to gradually decrease. Last year was the first after the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine when this share began to grow.
This trend may be explained by the peculiarities of statistics collection, as law enforcement began to fill out crime information cards more thoroughly, experts believe. Previously, the field «relationship with the victim» was not filled out at all, now attention is being paid to it.
In addition, according to UN data, in 2024, the number of men killed in Russia increased by 40% — from 6.6 to 9.3 thousand people. Before this, it had been continuously decreasing since 2002, except for a slight increase in 2014–2015.
It is likely that the number of victims of intentional killings began to include civilians who died in the occupied territories of Ukraine due to the war, as this began to be classified as a terrorist act, and the deceased became victims of a terrorist attack, which places them in the category of intentionally killed.
