The US has suspended the preparation of the summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, which was announced after their phone conversation last week, reported NBC News correspondent Garrett Haake on social media X, citing a senior White House official. "The phone conversation between Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov was "productive," but the US president believes that both sides are not sufficiently prepared for negotiations," the journalist wrote.
Later, the information was also confirmed by Axios and Reuters, citing sources in the White House.
Reuters interlocutors called the postponement of the Rubio-Lavrov meeting a sign of the US's reluctance to hold the summit, as Russia is not ready to make concessions. "It became clear to the Americans that there would be no deal with Trump in Budapest," one of the agency's sources believes.
The preparatory meeting scheduled for this week between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio was canceled. And this means that the Americans are not ready for the presidential summit, Reuters interlocutors said.
