“Such measures, I am convinced, have nothing to do with either justice or order”

The singer of the American rock band Garbage, Shirley Manson, wrote a letter in support of Mikhail Krieger, who is on a hunger strike in the colony

Manson's letter to the IK-5 colony was reported by Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova* to “Mediazona”*.

In the letter, the singer addressed the head of IK-5 in Naryshkino, Maxim Prilepsky, urging him not to isolate Krieger from other prisoners and to allow him visits with his daughter.

“Krieger has been repeatedly placed in solitary confinement, and now he is on a hunger strike — a desperate step by a person deprived of basic human communication and humane treatment. Such measures, I am convinced, have nothing to do with either justice or order,” the singer's letter states.

Since September 25, Krieger has declared a hunger strike due to repeated placements in solitary confinement, and on October 9, the support group reported that he switched to a dry hunger strike, refusing even water. Through the hunger strike, he wants to achieve a transfer to the general barrack.

IK-5 staff justify Krieger's isolation by stating that they have information about risks to his life and health if he is kept with other prisoners. Therefore, the activist has been repeatedly sent to a “safe place” — a solitary cell or solitary confinement. He has been in isolation since September 9.

Krieger himself has repeatedly stated that nothing threatens him in the colony, and the administration isolates him so that he does not communicate with other convicts.

Mikhail Krieger has been in custody since November 2022. He was sentenced to seven years in the colony on charges of “calls for extremism” and “justification of terrorism” due to posts in which he wrote about “fierce hatred for the regime” and attacks on FSB buildings in Arkhangelsk and Moscow.
