The Volgograd Regional Court sentenced 31-year-old Andrey Mitrofanov to 14 years in a high-security colony on charges of treason and money laundering, reported 'Mediazona'* citing the court's press service. Mitrofanov was also given one and a half years of restricted freedom and a fine of 50,000 rubles.

Mitrofanov graduated from the Volgograd Technical University and was a leading engineer at JSC 'Research Institute of Hydroacoustics 'Shtil'' in Volgograd. The institute is engaged in the development of hydroacoustic communication equipment and emergency rescue systems for the Navy.

Mitrofanov's case was brought to court in April 2025, the details of the accusation are unknown as the defendant's lawyer refused to answer 'Mediazona's' questions.

In 2025, Russian courts send two people to prison every working day on charges of treason and espionage, with 232 people becoming defendants in such cases in the first half of the year, calculated 'First Department'*. This is an absolute maximum in the country's modern history.
