The British newspaper The Sunday Times published the names of 13 Russian officers allegedly involved in war crimes in Bucha.
Five names were mentioned for the first time. This includes Colonel General Valery Solodchuk. The publication reported that he "commanded the troops accused of killings." This year, Putin promoted him in rank, the publication adds, without providing further details.
Colonel Andrey Kondrov, who commanded the 5th Tank Brigade, was identified by lawyers who analyzed Russian military documents.
Major General Vadim Pankov. According to The Times, he allegedly ordered the killing of 30 local residents and forced civilians to remove the bodies of dead Russian soldiers. The 45th Airborne Brigade, which Pankov commanded at the beginning of the war, participated in the assault on the Hostomel airport and was accused by Ukraine of numerous crimes against civilians.
Colonel Yuri Medvedev commanded the 37th Motorized Rifle Brigade, whose soldiers committed more than 40 rapes, the publication writes, noting that he was killed by rebellious Russian soldiers in 2022.
The Times list also mentions Colonel Sergey Karasev, who knocked out a woman's teeth with a pistol butt and shot another civilian.
The other eight officers listed in the publication were already named as being involved in the killings in Bucha. This includes Colonel General Alexander Chaiko, Major General Sergey Chubarykin, and Colonel Alexey Tolmachev.
Colonel General Alexander Sanchik commanded the 35th Army, which includes the 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade, whose arrival in Bucha was associated with the start of mass killings. Colonel Azatbek Omurbekov directly gave orders to Russian soldiers in Bucha.
It was previously reported that Colonel Artem Gorodilov commanded the 234th Airborne Regiment, whose soldiers committed murders with the commander's knowledge.
According to the SBU, Lieutenant Colonel Denis Suvorov tortured SBU officer Alexey Telizhenko to death during the occupation of Bucha. Major General Vladimir Seliverstov commanded the 106th Airborne Division, whose soldiers were accused of killing photojournalist Max Levin and his accompanying soldier.
In February 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the city of Bucha in the Kyiv region was occupied by the Russian army in the first days. In just over a month of occupation, the Russians killed more than 500 civilians in the city. The scale of the crimes became apparent only when the Kyiv region was liberated.
The exact number of victims has not yet been established, many residents are listed as missing. Currently, 381 people have been confirmed dead.
