Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the author of the idea of «guarantees similar to Article 5 of the NATO Charter» for Ukraine, brought a new version of «NATO-light» commitments to the EU leaders for discussion, Bloomberg learned. Guarantor countries may commit to making a decision on military assistance to Ukraine within 24 hours of a new Russian invasion.
According to sources, the support may include providing Kyiv with rapid defensive and economic assistance, strengthening the Ukrainian army, and imposing sanctions against Russia. It is not specified whether the plan will involve sending troops to Ukraine.
Discussion of the details is ongoing, and it is still unclear whether such guarantees will mean the deployment of foreign troops on Ukrainian territory. One option is to extend the Italy-Ukraine 2024 security agreement to all allies.
