US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that India and Pakistan agreed on a 'complete and immediate ceasefire' after the fourth day of strikes and counterstrikes on each other's military targets, writes Reuters. 'After long night negotiations mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed on a COMPLETE AND IMMEDIATE ceasefire. Congratulations to both countries for using common sense and great wisdom,' he wrote in a post on the Truth Social website.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan also stated that both countries agreed on a ceasefire 'with immediate effect'.
This statement was made at a time when concerns about the possibility of nuclear-armed countries escalating increased, as the Pakistani military announced a meeting of the highest military and civilian body controlling the country's nuclear weapons would take place. However, later the Minister of Defense of Pakistan stated that no such meeting was planned.
At the same time, officials from both sides showed a willingness to take a step back for now after four days of exchanges, while the civilian death toll on both sides of the border reached 66 people.
